Op de band: Ebony Eyes

De gebroeders nemen het lied op 31 oktober en 1 november 1960 op. Een aantal maanden later zou het lied als dubbele A-single met 'Walk Right Back' verschijnen.

De oorsprong

John D. Loudermilk (1934-2016) schreef het lied 'Ebony Eyes'. De Amerikaanse artiest componeerde ook voor zichzelf, maar met minder succes dan de songs die hij schreef voor artiesten als Marianne Faithful, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash en Sue Thompson.

Triest verhaal

In 'Ebony Eyes' hoor je het verhaal van een man die zijn vrouw verliest wanneer ze overlijdt in een vliegtuigcrash... Ze is zelfs onderweg naar haar eigen bruiloft. Er zit een opvallend stukje gesproken tekst in waarin het slechte nieuws al voelbaar is:

The plane was way overdue,
So I went inside to the airline's desk and I said:
"Sir, I wonder why 1203 is so late"
He said: "Oh they probably took off late,
or they may have run into some turbulent weather and had to alter the course"

I went back outside and waited at the gate
and I watched the beacon light from the control tower
as it whipped through the dark ebony skies if it were searching for

And then came the announcement over the loudspeaker,
"Would those having relatives or friends on Flight number 1203
please report to the chapel across the street at once..."
