Sting schrijft het nummer op synthesizer en wil het in eerste instantie helemaal zonder gitaar opnemen. Na een kleine ruzie met gitarist Andy Summer wordt besloten om beide instrumenten op plaat te zetten. 'Spirits in the Material World' behaalt in 1981 de 8e plek in de Nationale Hitparade
